Things That Make Me Happy

I listen to a podcast from NRP called Pop Culture Happy Hour on Friday that always ends with the panelists listing a few things that make them happy that week and I decided that since I am a person that tends to gravitate toward negativity, I was going to do this too. Every Monday. And please add something on here that has made you happy of late.

1. I am happy that the Million Women March went so well both in terms of numbers and in terms of there being few if any violence incidents. The one in Detroit was a love fest and Megan tells me the one in DC was transformational and one of the greatest events in her life.

2. I am happy that I saw a play by a friend's son called SMART LOVE and it was sensational. It was about A.I. and it was surprising, touching, thought-provoking. Keep the name Brian Letscher in mind. (He is on SCANDAL if the name rings a bell).

3. I am happy the film HIDDEN FIGURES is doing well. When's the last time a serious movie about the success of black women did well at the box office.

4. I am happy that Phil's C-T scans have been very good. He may only need 2 radiation shots and the last six chemo sessions.

5. I am happy to be nominated for an Edgar award. I never thought I would write a book much less have it get some love. And to be going with my daughter--well, wow!

So how about you? What are you happy about this week?

You did have a great week, Patti, despite the events of Friday, and you deserve the success. And great news about Phil's scans.

Happy? Getting our new car, having a nice, uneventful drive in good (i.e. dry, cool and pleasant) weather, and arriving to warm greetings at our now-familiar (it's our 8th year here) hotel in warm and sunny Florida.

Yes, I got a cold along the way, but it seems to be about gone this morning.

Also, I got the newest Salvo Montalbano book by Andrea Camilleri.

Phil is looking at Subarus today.

Your Edgar nom and Phil's good news made me happy this morning.

pattinase (abbott) said...

That is very empathetic, Bill. Thanks!

Tell Phil Subarus are the best. This is our third, second Forester. I wouldn't buy anything else.

We had a Forrester, which we loved. But then we felt guilty, living in Detroit as we do, with a Japanese car. Our Fusion has been great but we miss the AWD.

I'm happy for Phil's good news as well, and of course for your Edgar nomination. Down here I was happy to see some warm, sunny weather after several days in a row of cold, rainy gloom. The older I get, the more it seems like the so-called Seasonal Affective Disorder bothers me. As for vehicles, my daughter has a Forester and loves it, and it's been a very dependable car for her. I've driven it a few times and liked it, but the Toyota Sienna we bought last year is the best and most comfortable vehicle I've ever had, bar none. (And it makes me happy that I'm enough of a geezer to use phrases like "bar none".)

In Michigan, you would just go nuts. It has not been sunny for weeks here. And the gray is layers deep. Whoops, I forgot I was being positive today. We had and loved a Forester but in Detroit you always feel guilty not buying American and union. But we are going back to a Subaru I think. I am feeling less benevolent toward American and union workers who largely voted for Trump right now.

I'm just happy that you are happy.

Still on cars, another thing that makes me happy is seat warmers. How did we ever survive without them? I try not to let politics affect my mood too much, otherwise I wouldn't have been happy for, oh, the past 50 years or so.

Hi Patti,
Gray days drive me crazy too. If the sun shines in the winter in Minneapolis, it usually means it's brutally cold, but this week we had a couple sunny days in the 30s...happy days.
Stuff I liked this week: Pantone Color of the Day: Purple Impression, Kyo Maclear's book Birds Art Life, a 2.99 drugstore cologne I bought that smells like Plantikows,a florist shop near my childhood home, and Beth Orton-Paris Train to listen to...
Best Wishes,
Nancy

I'm HAPPY about:

- Your Edgar nomination
- Phil's good scans
- We have a sunny, beautiful morning after two weeks of snow, ice, rain, gloom
- The hummingbird comes to our feeder every morning
- Our cat Mirabelle is healthy and loving
- I have many wonderful books to read and enjoy

As for cars, we love our 2013 Subaru Outback. A great car.

My Rotary Club's 3rd Beer and Wine Tasting is this weekend. If we sell all our tickets and do well on the silent auction we'll raise close to $20,000. That money will go finishing the playground at a public park and supporting our scholarship fund for graduating high schoolers.

I'm happy to see my children and wife every day.

The new kitten is behaving and the family likes him.

Wonderful answers, people. YOU MAKE ME HAPPY.

That Sienna is Just. Too. Big.

Parking in Brooklyn is tough enough as it is without having to get a giant space for that.

We have heated leather seats in the new Forester. I wouldn't think you'd need them in Texas.

James Reasoner said...

The Sienna is hard to park, you're right about that. That's the only thing I've found about it that I don't like.

Earlier this month the low temps here were 11 and 12 a couple of mornings, with wind chills well below zero. I want a heated steering wheel, too.

Another thing that makes me happy is reading the responses to this post. You folks are good people.

How right you are, James.

Jeff Meyerson said...

Thanks, James. I knew you were further north than Bill in Alvin but that is cold!

I'm happy that my daughter Katie attended the Women's March in Washington, D.C. this weekend despite fighting a bad cold. I'm happy about Phil's CT Scan, too. And, I'm really looking forward to seeing you and Megan in Toronto in October for BOUCHERCON!

We are both registered!

My granddaughters make me happy, as do my daughters. I'm grateful that I have enough money to survive even if I don't thrive. I'm happy that my mother is in good health and will be 94 in a month. I'm happty to be an American and proud to be a veteran.

Good to hear about Phil's positive news!

Always a little leery about admitting to myself I feel happy, as if that would put a jinx on it. Plus over the years I've cultivated a bit of a curmudgeonly mien, which I always try to maintain with an occasional humbug or two. When I get thru a day without losing that edge I go to sleep happy. The sun and a storm front are dueling out there right now. One side of me is pulling for the dark clouds, the other for a solar decision. It's (no groans, please) up in the air at the moment.

Making a rare exception, happywise, I'm happy for you and Phil, Patti, and for your magical daughter. (sure hope I didn't jinx anything!)
