Lovely voice, but sadly she died tragically young. (BTW, she's the mother of Maya Rudolph of "SNL" and "Bridesmaids" among other things.)
Oh, I miss Minnie Ripperton! Thanks for the reminder, Patti.
Do you think a unique voice like this would ever make it in today's manufactured homogeneous pop music factory where all the men sound the same and all the women screech their high notes? That's quite a range she has and she does it without destroying her vocal cords.
Loving You is definitely what one that sets you at ease :)
What happened to my comment? Weird. Here's something I didn't know:According to the liner notes from Riperton's compilation CD Petals, the melody for "Lovin' You" was created as a distraction for her daughter (Maya Rudolph) when she was a baby so that Minnie and her husband Richard could hang out. Maya was in the studio with her mother on the day the song was recorded and Riperton can be heard singing her daughter's name at the end of the song, but only in the unedited or album version of the song. The song fades out early in the single edit, because the disc jockeys felt that the repeated "MAYA" was being overdone and too misunderstood, thinking that it was a "Mayan Chant".Jeff M.
I had no idea she was Maya's mother. It's always a good day when I learn something new.
